The Outpost Weather Station Project

Thanks for dropping by Outpost Weather! This is the home of the Outpost Weather Station project, where we collect weather data from off the beaten track.

We build our own custom weather stations and work with microcontrollers, sensors and communication technologies such as cellular data, LoRa radio and WiFi.

Printing 3d parts allows us to try out different ideas. In prototyping we often need custom parts to make one manufacturer’s hardware fit another’s. We use a collection of invaluable websites where designs can be customised very easily although for true flexibility a familiarity with CAD can be very useful.

Our early builds started with the Raspberry Pi but power considerations led us down the route of microcontrollers such as the ESP32 and most software is written in C++.

This project continues to evolve. The goal is to produce a variety of systems that anyone can build and deploy in a remote setting with just a mast, a ground spike and a cellular data card.

The project already has some four years of part time development on the clock. There is a considerable amount of material in the archive that is yet to be published so don’t forget to check back for updates.
